Case Study: How a Photographer Reached 163,000+ People on Instagram

How we used storytelling, influencer marketing, and strategic content to build a more engaged audience ahead of photography’s busiest season.

Beautiful content alone isn’t a strategy. This is especially true in the photography business, where visual content is at the heart of the service, competition is high, and audience interest often shifts with the seasons. When we started working on a professional photographer’s Instagram profile in Sofia in August 2024, the goal wasn’t simply to increase the number of posts. We faced a more important question: How could we use the quieter months to build interest, trust, and an active audience ahead of the busiest period for the business—Christmas photo sessions?

Over four months, we developed an Instagram strategy combining storytelling, human-centered content, influencer marketing, and engagement campaigns. The result: 163,500+ people reached, a 166.4% increase in reach, a 125% increase in interactions, and 355 new followers. But the numbers are only the end result. What matters more is how we got there.

Visual content captures attention, but strategy is what turns interest into meaningful interaction.

The challenge: how do you generate interest during the off-season? August and September aren’t among the busiest months for studio and family photography. That meant direct messaging like “Book your photo session” wouldn’t be enough. From the outset, we identified three main challenges. Seasonality. Interest in the service was lower, and it was too early to promote Christmas photo sessions directly. Rather than wait for the busy season, we decided to use this period to build an audience and brand awareness.

Limited organic visibility. The content was reaching a relatively small audience. The profile needed new touchpoints with potential clients and a stronger presence among people who didn’t yet know the photographer. A passive audience. People were viewing the beautiful photos, but they didn’t have a strong enough reason to interact with the content. This is a common challenge for photography profiles. A photo can be striking, but without context, a story, and a human presence, it often remains just a beautiful image in the feed. That’s why we set the main goal for the period: not to sell immediately, but to prepare the audience for when demand naturally starts to grow.

The off-season doesn’t mean marketing should stop. Sometimes it’s the best time to build the audience that will buy when demand increases.

The strategy: connect with the audience first, sell later. Instead of posting more often without a clear reason, we built the content around the different stages of customer behavior. The idea was for every post to have a clear purpose. One piece of content would build trust. Another would reach new people. A third would encourage interaction. Only then would we move to stronger messaging focused on specific services and bookings.

High reach means little if there’s no reason for people to stay, engage, and remember the brand.

TRENDCODD INSIGHT

Stage 1: Storytelling and building trust

The first change was in how we presented the service. Photography businesses naturally have a wealth of strong visual content. But great photography alone doesn’t always build a connection between the audience and the person behind the camera. So we stopped using Instagram solely as a visual portfolio. We began showing more of the process, personality, and experience behind the images. We gradually introduced content featuring: stories behind specific photo sessions; more of the person behind the camera; moments from the working process; content that presents the photographer as a person, not just a service provider; more active communication through Stories; and topics that help the audience relate to the situations and emotions.

The goal was for the Instagram profile to stop looking like a gallery of beautiful photographs alone. We wanted it to start functioning as a distinctive photography brand with character, style, and a person behind it. This was particularly important because when it comes to family and personal photo sessions, clients don’t choose based on the portfolio alone. They also choose someone they can trust.

Stage 2: Influencer marketing to reach a new audience

Once the profile had content that better showcased the photographer and their style, we moved on to growing the audience. We chose to partner with a micro-influencer whose audience overlapped with one of the key customer segments. We focused on people interested in family content, parenting, and family-related experiences. This mattered. We weren’t simply looking for a profile with lots of followers.

We were looking for an audience with a genuine connection to the service. Instead of a standard sponsored post, we used an Instagram Collaboration Post. This meant the content appeared in front of both the photographer’s and the influencer’s audiences. The result of a single post was: 96 034 people reached organically. This was the strongest visibility result during the period we reviewed. More importantly, the post brought thousands of new users directly to the profile at a time when there was already enough content to present the brand effectively. This is where the difference between a one-off influencer post and a well-planned campaign becomes clear. Reach alone isn’t enough. What people find when they visit the profile matters.

organic reach
The right partner doesn’t just bring visibility—they connect you with an audience that has a genuine interest in the service.

Stage 3: From visibility to engagement

After the strong increase in visibility, the next task was to give new users a reason to engage with the profile. To do this, we launched a giveaway campaign. It wasn’t a standalone promotion designed simply to generate comments. It was part of the overall strategy. The campaign generated more than 1 400 interactions, including comments and shares. This gave the profile an extra boost just before the busy season. The combination of reach, a new audience, and follow-up engagement created a much stronger foundation for communicating about the Christmas photo sessions.

That was the goal from the very beginning: not just a one-time spike in the stats, but an audience that already knew the photographer and had engaged with their content.

The Results

For the period from August to November 2024, Meta Business Suite reported the following results:

163 500+ people reached

Total reach increased by 166.4% compared with the previous comparable period.

+13.04%  ENGAGEMENT RATE

Users didn’t just see the content. They engaged with it.

+125% increase in interactions

The total number of interactions increased significantly compared with the previous period.

355 new followers. The profile attracted 355 new followers. It’s important to note that the goal wasn’t simply to increase the number of followers. The strategy focused on attracting an audience with a genuine interest in the photography services and the potential to become clients.

96,034 Organic Reach from a single postThe strategic influencer partnership became the strongest source of one-off organic visibility during the period. It showed just how powerful influencer marketing can be when a partner is chosen for audience relevance, not just follower count.

What did this project teach us?

The most important takeaway from this case study isn’t that you need to post more. The opposite, in fact.Every piece of content needs a purpose. One post can build trust.Another can reach a new audience.A third can encourage interaction. And the next can connect directly to a service and a sale.In this project, we didn’t rely on one “viral” post to do everything. We used different formats as part of a cohesive system.Storytelling built a stronger connection. The influencer partnership increased visibility. The giveaway campaign engaged the new audience. And all communication was planned so that, by the time peak season began, the profile already had a much stronger foundation.

A slow season doesn’t mean weak marketing

This is perhaps one of the project’s most important takeaways.Periods of lower demand don’t have to mean putting marketing on hold.On the contrary. They’re often the best time to build brand awareness, trust, and an audience. That way, when peak season begins, the business isn’t starting its communications from scratch. That’s exactly what we did for this photography brand.Instead of waiting for the Christmas season, we used the months leading up to it to prepare the audience. And when interest naturally began to grow, the profile was already reaching significantly more people and had a much more engaged community.

Social media shouldn’t just look active

It needs direction.Posting content without a strategy can create the impression of activity, but that doesn’t automatically mean the profile is working toward the business’s goals. At Trendcodd, we see social media as part of a brand’s wider digital ecosystem.Content, advertising, the website, and other channels all need to work together. If you post regularly but aren’t sure how your content contributes to your actual business goals, frequency probably isn’t the problem. You may be missing a clear strategy.

YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA CAN WORK AS A STRATEGY, NOT A CHORE.

If you post regularly but aren’t sure how your content contributes to your business’s real goals, let’s take a look together. We’ll help you build a system where your content, advertising, and other digital channels all work in the same direction.

LET’S TALK
How often should a photographer post on Instagram?

There’s no universal number of posts that guarantees results. What matters more is that every piece of content has a clear purpose—to build trust, reach a new audience, encourage interaction, or promote a specific service. Consistency matters, but strategy matters more than posting frequency.

Is Instagram a good fit for photographers?

Yes. Instagram is a highly visual platform and a natural fit for photography businesses. To get good results, though, a profile needs to be more than just a portfolio. Storytelling, behind-the-scenes content, a personal touch and active communication help potential clients build trust in the photographer.

Does influencer marketing work for local businesses?

Yes, when you choose a partner based on their audience, not just their follower count. For local services, a micro-influencer with a smaller but more relevant audience can often be more effective than a larger account with a broad, unrelated following.

How can you increase organic reach on Instagram?

Organic reach depends on many factors, including content relevance, interactions, format, shares, collaborative posts and audience behavior. Rather than looking for a single “algorithm trick,” a more sustainable approach is to combine different formats and create content for a specific audience.

Are giveaway campaigns worthwhile?

Yes, but only as part of a broader strategy. A giveaway can drive strong short-term engagement, but if the prize and entry requirements attract people with no genuine interest in the business, the result may be no more than a temporary spike in the numbers.

When should marketing for a seasonal service begin?

Before the busy season starts. Quieter months can be used to build awareness, trust and an audience. That way, when interest in the service begins to grow, the business is already reaching people who know it.

What’s the difference between reach and engagement?

Reach shows how many unique users saw the content, while engagement measures the actions they take, such as likes, comments, shares and saves. High reach creates visibility, but engagement shows whether the content actually prompted a response.

Can social media bring in customers without paid advertising?

Yes, but results depend on the business, its audience, the competition and the strategy. Organic content can build trust and generate inquiries, while paid advertising can help accelerate and scale these efforts.
